SETTLED — HOW TO BE SETTLED BY TEFILA

Chazal gave us a siddur with a specific order and there was a reason for that order, sourced in navua and ruach hakodesh, and when we follow the order and internalize it, our tefilla will be tremendously enhanced. This applies to every area in avodas Hashem. Whenever chazal gave us ways to do our avodas Hashem, if we simply follow the instructions chazal set out for us, there is a reason for everything so if we simply follow what chazal gave us without adding to it we will reap the benefit of the actions we are trying to do.
So if chazal gave us a specific order in tefilla why did chazal give us the hakdamas they gave us to lead up to Shemona Esre which is the main part of our tefilla, everything else leads up to it. Why the hakdamas? First, it is to internalize that Hashem is the source of everything, that it is only Hashem who can provide us with our needs and bring our yeshuas, that nothing else, we don’t expect the yeshua from anywhere else so we wont get distracted by all these extraneous thoughts that reflect our not understanding this, so when we focus on that understanding that Hashem is the only address to be concerned with in our davening then we can wholeheartedly focus our tefillas to Hashem. But there is more. A person has to be kovea mokom l’tefilaso – even within 6ft of this place. It is important to have a set place - even a woman should have a set place. We have to approach tefilla with menuchas hanefesh. A person settles when he has a place, a home team advantage so to speak, where he knows where he’s going, he can get comfortable and familiar. We struggle with kavanah in tefilla is because we are not settled down in our tefilla, we are still in the middle of what we are doing, even if we pull our mind away, we don’t feel settled. Similarly that is why we have a set order to tefila and all the hakdamas - psukei dzimra, krias shema and its brochos all help us to focus on who we are talking to, and also to settle us into the right mindset. Having a set place reduces our distractions so we can concentrate. To have a proper conversation we need to be focused on the person we are conversing with and comfortable in our minds and our mokom.

SUMMARY
A person needs to be menuchas hanefesh to daven properly. The hakdamas to Shemona Esre help settle our minds to concentrate properly and we should also have a set place, which we are familiar with, is “home”  which will limit distractions, to focus on Hashem and not on new environment.
